  • 18 years or older
  • Identification, such as driver license
  • Signature for the Adoption Contract
  • Signature of agreement to Spay/Neuter
  • Cash or Check for the Adoption Fee

Adoption Fees:

  • Adoption fees for dogs is $75, this fee helps to offset the average cost of $105.82 we spend on each dog to provide the following:
    • Distemper/Parvo Vaccine
    • Dewormer
    • Flea Prevention
    • Heartworm Test (if of age)
    • Rabies Vaccine
    • Spay or Neuter
    • Microchip
  • Adoption fees for cats is $40, this fee helps to offset the average cost of $71.17 we spend on each cat to provide the following:
    • Feline Vaccine
    • Dewormer
    • Flea Prevention
    • Rabies Vaccine
    • Spay or Neuter
    • Microchip
  • We do on occasion offer adoption fee discounts, in most cases it depends on the particular animal and others it depends on if the adoption fee was sponsored by someone else. We will not discount a fee when requested.
  • We do accept donations above and beyond the adoption fee

Not all animals are spayed or neutered prior to adoption, but everyone does have a scheduled date. The animal can go home the same day of adoption, however, the adopter will be responsible for dropping off and picking up the animal from their spay/neuter appointment.

In general all scheduled spay/neuter and rabies vaccines are scheduled through the Low Cost Spay Neuter Clinic. They send a bus typically every 3rd Friday of the month to pick up and drop off animals at the Riverside Park located at 100 W Water St, Rushville, IN 46173.

Adopters do have the option to have the spay/neuter and rabies completed at their vet clinic of their choosing, however, the adoption fee remains the same. The adopter is to either have their clinic of choice take payment over the phone, have the clinic invoice us, or the adopter can pull the full amount and request reimbursement from the shelter. We will only pay the total amount we would have paid for a spay/neuter and rabies vaccine through the Low Cost Spay Neuter Clinic, the adopter will be responsible for the remaining balance.  For example: We spend $40 on a female cat spay and $17 on the rabies vaccine through the Low Cost Spay Neuter Clinic. The adopter chooses to use their own vet who charges $140 for a cat spay and $15 for a rabies vaccine. The Rushville Animal Shelter will agree to pay up to $57 towards the spay and rabies vaccine, leaving the adopter to be responsible for the total amount of $83.

Suggestions:

  • Prepare your home for a pet ahead of time
  • Bring a collar and leash or carrier to transport the pet home
  • Bring your dog(s) along for an introduction (some dogs will be required to meet new dogs prior to leaving the shelter)
  • Have all family members in the home help in picking out a new member of the family

*DID YOU KNOW*

Our tax funded budget does not pay for any vet care, such as vaccines or spay and neuter. The only way we can provide these necessary preventative and treatment measures is to depend on adoption fees and monetary donations!
